Les Deux Magots

I am the cafe Deux Magots

Since I opened in 1885, Les Deux Magots Cafe took over from Le Procope as the cafe of ideas and the place to meet. Worldwide movements have been born in my simple atmosphere. I long had a reputation as the rendezvous of the literary and intellectual élite of the city with patrons such as Surrealist artists, intellectuals such as Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre, and young writers, such as Ernest Hemingway. Others included Albert Camus and Pablo Picasso.

My name originally belonged to a fabric and novelty shop at nearby 23 Rue de Buci. The shop sold silk lingerie and took its name from a popular play of the moment (1800s) entitled Les Deux Magots de la Chine (Two Figurines from China.)

One of the few cafes remaining where you can get a real hot chocolate. Once tasted, never forgotten.

There is also a huge list of Deux Magots literary prize winners since 1933.
